French
Intent
Learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides a different way for children to deepen their understanding of other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. At Cottingley Village Primary, it is the intention of our MFL curriculum to enthuse and develop our children’s interest and thirst for learning other languages.
Children are provided with opportunities to learn the French language throughout Key Stage 2 in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We aim to develop children’s awareness of similarities and differences between cultures and inspire them to want to find out more. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French. We aim for children will leave our school with a love and curiosity surrounding other languages and an understanding of the importance of learning Modern Foreign Languages which they can pursue throughout their lives.
Implementation
Our MFL curriculum is designed to develop not only our children’s language skills, but also their love of learning a language. It progressively develops language skills throughout Key Stage 2 to ensure the children are confident in knowing more and remembering more about the French Language. Children are provided with multiple times short learning opportunities across a week which focus on consolidation and practice of prior learning and introduction of new vocabulary across a theme. This allows the children to acquire new language and then use and apply it in a range of different scenarios and topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As their confidence and skills grow, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences, as well as through the use of computer technology.
Assessment
The assessment of French learning throughout Key Stage 2 is done largely through talking to the children and holding conversations with them in French based upon the themes they have covered. Children have opportunities to showcase their French learning through Sharing Assemblies with Parents & Careers and using Computer Technologies to create PowerPoints and videos.
